Making Time Your Ally

Have you ever considered making time your ally? We speak about time in many different ways. We lose time.  We find time.  We don’t know where the time went.  We chase time.  We manage time. We say time goes slow. We say time goes fast.  Some say there is no time outside the physical existence. It can all get confusing. Your thoughts and beliefs about time can either help you or hinder you when making a huge career change.

How can you make time your ally? As a career coach I help people find their dream career, a soul-centered career that springs from the deepest wishes of your soul.  My clients often come to their soul-centered career later in life. They usually have had up to two successful careers. They come to a point in their life where finding meaningful work is their most powerful drive.  Many long for work that makes them feel satisfied and gives them a sense of making a difference.

Yet, many people let their beliefs and thoughts about time stop them. One such limiting thought is “It’s too late for me.”

The bottom line is that believing it’s too late for you can stop you from taking action towards your dreams. It makes the journey more challenging and less enjoyable.

I made the decision to study art at university after studying psychology for a year.  It meant that I was starting as a freshman two years later than most of my peers. At 19 years old that seemed like a very big deal. I felt like it was too late because I believed “real artists” knew they  were destined for this path very early in life. I would have enjoyed that journey so much more if I wasn’t battling the belief that it was too late for me.

I allowed this one belief to torture me throughout my time in school and for many years afterwards. I wasn’t able to relax during my time in school because I was always trying to prove to myself that I belonged there.  I felt like an imposter.  I did not begin to relax into my chosen field and enjoy myself until almost 10 years later.

We limit ourselves when we allow our beliefs about time to limit our choices. Shifting your beliefs about time will serve you in all aspects of your life.

The first step in changing your beliefs is awareness. How you think about time is often driven by cultural, societal, as well as a personal beliefs. Once you are able to identify your thoughts about time, you can choose to step outside your existing belief system. You only need to do this long enough to consider an alternative. Then that belief begins to lose its power over you.

One method of doing that is to find evidence to disprove the belief that you hold.  If I had looked for stories of artists who had started later in life, I would have felt more comfortable with my path and less judgmental.

If you find yourself longing for a different career but have the thought that “it’s too late” consider this. A friend posted a memorial to his mother who recently passed.  He shared the story of her life and career, right up to her receiving a PhD in Jungian Psychology at 80! I was so inspired by this story.

Have you been limiting your choices by beliefs that are holding you back?  I can help you identify and break through their limiting beliefs so you can feel empowered and take action towards the career of your dreams.
